About the project

Many children and young people participate in arts, culture and heritage (ACH) activities, yet there is very little research reporting on this in Aotearoa New Zealand. Research is particularly lacking for young people’s ACH participation under 15 years of age. The current research project aims to explore data from Growing Up in New Zealand (GUiNZ)’s 12-year data collection wave (DCW) as well as previous DCWs to gain insight into children and young people’s participation in a variety of arts, cultural, sporting and heritage activities in the GUiNZ cohort, in order to inform policy and service delivery.

The specific objectives of this study are to:

• Describe how young people are participating in ACH activities at 12 years of age and across different time points,

• Explore the barriers to and enablers of participation in ACH activities, and

• Explore the benefits or positive health and wellbeing outcomes relating to participation in ACH activities.

Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies, percentages, chi-square tests of independence, and adjusted estimates) of the characteristics and outcomes of ACH participation compared to non-participation and/or lowered participation.

This study is associated with a bespoke report commissioned by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, and findings will be used to inform the Ministry's wider strategies to increase access to and participation in ACH activities.
