Research Projects Using Growing Up Data
Now We Are 12: Young people’s experiences of depression and anxiety symptoms. Snapshot 7
This work examines young people's experiences with mental health services and their symptoms of depression and anxiety, with a focus on how these symptoms may vary across key demographic groups—gender, ethnicity, and deprivation. Specifically, it looks at the changes in depression and anxiety symptoms from ages 8 to 12 and identifies factors that may influence these outcomes. The analysis is based on data collected at the 12-year wave, where mothers reported their child's diagnosis of depression or anxiety and their engagement with mental health services. Additionally, young people self-reported their symptoms of depression and anxiety at both ages 8 and 12. Using frequency statistics and regression methods, the report investigates the relationship between depression and anxiety symptoms and various demographic and socio-environmental factors. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how mental health issues manifest and evolve in childhood, and how different demographic factors may shape young people's experiences with mental health services. This research highlights the importance of targeted interventions that consider these factors to improve mental health outcomes for children and adolescents.
